The vocabulario Náhuatl-Español (1571): The major contribution of Alonso de Molina to missionary lexicography

We analyze the third dictionary by Alonso de Molina, his last andmore successful work. It constitutes an absolute break with theromance tradition represented by Nebrija. This book is the mostgenuine of his work. From a lexicographical point of view, this noveldictionary was made by a systematic effort of compiling the greatestwealth of terms in Nahuatl language. This effort was made by theFranciscan friars thanks to the accumulated experience and labour inthe study of Amerindian languages in New Spain. Therefore this lastvocabulary is undoubtedly an undying linguistic monument. Unlikethe rest of lexicographical compilation, the "Nahuatl Vocabulary"(1571) must be in the most outstanding position in the colonial linguistic historiography and missionary linguistics. It is undoubtedly aninvaluable legacy for the knowledge of the social, cultural, historicaland linguistic situation of ancient Nahuatl.
