Abstract

Chile ratified in 2010 its membership as a full member in the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). In this article, key actors’ ideas on the institutionalization of the organization and the participation of the country in it are studied. To that end, face-to-face and in depth interviews with key informants were conducted during 2012-2013. The press was also analyzed to know the public discourse about the organization and to contextualize it with the opinions of the interviewees (2010-2012). I argue that the key actors perceived potential benefits of Chile’s participation in an uncertain international scenario and lower costs, since it did not involve a cession of sovereignty and full membership did not exclude the application of open regionalism.
