Abstract

In this paper we argue that from the point of view of peace and security, it is likely that the events that can contribute most significantly to shape international politics in Latin America will be the following: The behavior of the United States, especially with regard to the Soviet Union and vice versa; the extent to which these two actors are or are not willing to continue "transferring" their controversies to the Americas; the consequences of the Falklands war on the military and civilian elites in South America; the invasion and conquest of Granada; the large external debt of the most important countries in Latin America with the private banks of the United States and its repercussions and, finally, the durability of the redemocratization processes that the continent is going through.
