This paper reiterates the thesis pointed out by other analysts that the bilateral relationship between Chile and the United States has had more moments of distance than of rapprochement. This hypothesis is verified by a historical description of the ties between the two nations since the 19th century. However, we argue that a new type of relationship is being formed based on a shared international realism and that a more constructive approach is being implemented in the current Bush administration, especially in the context of the Americas Initiative, a policy that results from a thorough review of the United States economic policy towards Latin America.
