Abstract

The analysis of different political processes, including democratic ones, has been approached academically from political sociology and political theory. These studies deepened the identification of endogenous variables and the degree of their intervention in the development of the aforementioned processes. The present work contributes new elements on the influence of exogenous variables in a determined political conjuncture: the redemocratization of the Southern Cone of America in the eighties. In this sense, it examines the change from the pro-authoritarian thesis –supported by the North American governments in the seventies- to those that favor democracy. It is analyzed how this political decision participated in the promotion, form and limits of the rebirth of Latin American democracies.
